Ductless & HVAC Questions, Answered.

Everything homeowners in Skagit County and Whidbey Island need to know about ductless mini-splits, heat pumps, and HVAC.

Ductless Mini-Splits 101

A ductless mini-split is a heating and cooling system that doesn't require traditional ductwork. It's made up of two main parts: a compact outdoor compressor/condenser unit and one or more indoor air-handling units mounted on your wall or ceiling. The two units connect through a small hole in the wall via a refrigerant line.

Mini-splits are ideal for older homes throughout Skagit County and Whidbey Island that weren't built with ducts, as well as for new additions, garages, shops, and any room that's hard to heat or cool with a central system.
Most ductless mini-splits are heat pumps. A heat pump moves heat rather than generating it, making it extremely efficient. In heating mode it pulls warmth from outdoor air and moves it inside. In summer it reverses, acting as an air conditioner.

All systems Evergreen Ductless Solutions installs in Skagit County and Whidbey Island are heat pump mini-splits — giving you both heating and cooling in one unit year-round.
Absolutely — they're one of the best fits for our region. The mild, wet winters of Skagit County and Whidbey Island are ideal for heat pump mini-splits. Modern units operate efficiently down to –13°F, well below anything we see around Mount Vernon, Anacortes, or Oak Harbor.

The result? Comfortable, even heat all winter without the cost of baseboard heaters or propane — and quiet air conditioning during our increasingly warm summers.
Yes! A multi-zone mini-split uses one outdoor unit connected to multiple indoor heads — typically up to 5 zones. Each zone has its own thermostat so everyone can set their own temperature. Single-zone systems are great for a single room, garage, or addition.

Installation

A standard single-zone installation typically takes 4–8 hours. Multi-zone systems with 3–5 heads may take a full day or occasionally two. Most Skagit County and Whidbey Island homeowners are up and running the same day we start.
Yes — we handle all permits required by Skagit County and Island County (which covers Whidbey Island) building departments. Permitted work protects your home's value and is required by most homeowner insurance policies. We take care of all the paperwork.
No — that's the whole point! Ductless mini-splits require no existing ductwork. Installation involves only a small 3-inch hole through the wall for the refrigerant line — perfect for the many older craftsman and farmhouse-style homes throughout Skagit County and Whidbey Island.
We install and service Mitsubishi Electric, Bosch, Daikin, and Coleman, Hisense. We'll recommend the right brand and model for your home's layout, square footage, and budget. All brands include manufacturer warranties we help you register.

In most cases, yes — especially replacing electric baseboard heaters, propane, or oil heat. Heat pump mini-splits are 200–400% efficient, meaning they deliver 2–4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. Pacific Northwest homeowners commonly report significant reductions in winter heating bills after switching to ductless.

Service, Maintenance & Repair

We recommend a professional tune-up once per year, ideally in spring before cooling season — includes coil cleaning, refrigerant check, and electrical inspection.

As a homeowner, clean the indoor filter every 4–6 weeks during heavy use. It takes about 5 minutes and makes a real difference in efficiency and air quality. We'll show you how when we install your system.
